Looking around the room at the FeedMore luncheon, I am humbled, not only by the lawyers who surround me, but by the people who work and volunteer at FeedMore. These are the folks who are working together day in and day out to efficiently and effectively fight hunger all around us.
The need is enormous. Approximately 1 million people in Virginia do not know where their next meal is coming from. In 2015, FeedMore alone provided 18 million meals, serving 20 million pounds of food. Meals on Wheels, Mobile Pantry, Kids Café, and the Backpack program are some of the programs that facilitate distribution of these meals. Two hundred and fifty volunteers per day help FeedMore provide these enormous resources to our community.
We have been invited here today as a top contributor to the Legal Food Frenzy to help celebrate the 755,000 pounds raised locally in 2016. I am surrounded by other leaders of this effort from law firms, legal departments, government entities and law schools. Allen, Allen, Allen, & Allen is recognized for contributing 53,312 pounds. I feel the excitement and appreciation in the room as I accept the award on our behalf. As I walk back to my seat, I think about the many phone calls, transporting of cans and efforts it took to exceed our goal of 42,000 pounds, and I realize how small those efforts were in relation to the need we are helping to meet. I am proud of our high staff participation and 100% participation from attorneys and management.
Now in its 10th year, the Central Virginia Legal Food Frenzy is a great opportunity for Virginia lawyers to challenge each other outside the court room. Lawyers and law firms love to compete and reducing hunger in Virginia is a goal one we are all happy to fight for. Statewide, the 2016 food frenzy raised a total of 1.3 million pounds of food.
Thank you to Attorney General Mark Herring, the young lawyers division of the Virginia Bar Association, and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks for sponsoring the annual Legal Food Frenzy. Thank you to FeedMore for inspiring us with this luncheon to do even more. Thank you to everyone at Allen and Allen for your devotion to this worthy project and for stepping up to help our communities in a meaningful way.
The practice of law and our work here at the Allen Law Firm gives us the privilege of helping and serving others every day. What better way to expand on this service than by participating in the 2016 Legal Food Frenzy.
