Work-Life Balance

At Allen & Allen, we recognize that a positive work/life balance is key to your health, happiness, and productivity, so we take a whole-life approach to our pay and benefits packages. In addition to our competitive holiday, vacation, and sick time allowances, we offer training opportunities, a 37.5-hour full-time work week, flex time, fitness incentives—and even set aside some time for fun.

Flexible Schedules

Finding a schedule that suits your individual needs and responsibilities isn’t always easy. With a 37.5-hour full-time work week and overtime kept to a minimum, we work with each position and strive to offer alternatives to a strict 9-5. Depending on the role, we have part-time, reduced hours, and partial work-from-home options.

Special Perks & Extras

From our annual Firm Family Picnic to ‘Friday Flextime’ (which allows for employees to leave up to 4 hours early every other Friday), we make sure to set aside time for fun. Paralegal’s Week and Administrative Professional’s Day give the entire company reason to celebrate our staff and their successes. We look forward to other special programs like our annual recognition of 5, 10 and 20-year (and more!) tenure milestones. Then there’s the Halloween costume contest, winter holiday party (a semi-formal evening of dinner and dancing), and our ‘Santa’ party for kids and grandkids. We all take delight in our annual ‘Marcella Murray’ client service award, named in honor of a former team member who consistently demonstrated amazing customer service.

Training

We invest in our employees through training opportunities that start the day you do. From our comprehensive orientation to our job-specific sessions, we give you access to the tools you need to succeed in your new position. Beginning your first day and continuing as you progress, you can take advantage of many opportunities to further your knowledge, from formal classes to informal ‘brown bag’ lunch meetings on staff-requested topics.

We provide individual job enrichment opportunities, including seminars, conferences, and workshops offered by educational or professional groups. Important non-work topics such as personal finances, budgeting, retirement planning, and personal health and wellness are also covered.

This core value originates with our firm’s founder, George E. Allen, who created Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen in 1910. During the Civil Rights movement, George E. Allen represented Fred Wallace, a Black man wrongly accused of accosting two deputy sheriffs. The trial took place during a contentious time in Virginia’s history - the 1950s. Though it was an unpopular decision in the legal community, George E. Allen took on the case pro bono and secured justice for Fred Wallace. In 1964, our founder won the very first Griffin Bell Award for Courageous Advocacy.

The ideals of George E. Allen are what our firm was built upon. His spirit of virtuosity and moral responsibility is embedded into our culture.

Some examples of our inclusivity are:

  • Multiple attorneys and staff at our firm are bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English. We also have Spanish-speaking professionals on our New Case Team to help serve our clients.
  • Each of our seven locations is handicap-accessible and ADA-compliant.
  • Among our team of Shareholders, we have women and people of color.
  • We have a diverse cultural base of attorneys, from Black to Asian-American, and attorneys who immigrated from different countries.
  • Our website is easily translated into Spanish with the click of a button.
  • Our firm regularly participates in cultural and community events, such as the ¿Que Pasa? Festival, and has made donations to the Urban League.
  • Our Allen & Allen Cares: Helping our Heroes initiative provides recognition and donations to charities, many of which have a focus on underserved populations, such as the unhoused and those with mental and physical disabilities.
  • The George E. Allen Academic Scholarship gives the firm an opportunity to bolster high school seniors who have overcome adversity. Every year, we award 15 students a $2,000 scholarship, to help them pursue their education.

Benefits

Another way that Allen & Allen demonstrates a commitment to our employees is through our exceptional compensation and benefits packages. We are consistently enhancing our offerings in order to remain competitive. The firm offers 100% company paid medical/dental insurance for employees, firm paid life, short-term and long-term disability insurance, a 401(k) plan with rich contributions, and generous personal, sick, and vacation leave.

Medical

We offer three different options for medical insurance. Employees can choose between an HMO or PPO plan, or elect the High Deductible Health Plan with a Health Savings Account. The Allen Law Firm pays 100% of the employee-only premium for the HMO plan and the High Deductible Health Plan. If an employee elects the High Deductible Health Plan, the firm matches up to $75 a month in the employee’s Health Savings Account. An employee who would prefer to maintain their coverage elsewhere is eligible for an “opt out” payment.

Dental

The Allen Law Firm pays 100% of the Dental PPO coverage premium for the employee. A payroll deduction only applies if an employee elects to cover dependents on the dental plan.

Life and Disability

Allen & Allen provides a life insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment policy at no cost for all full-time employees. Employees have the option to purchase additional amounts of term life insurance as well as coverage for a spouse and children.

Employee Assistance Program

Allen & Allen offers an employee assistance plan, which provides all employees and members of their household access to qualified counseling services, allowing up to four visits free of charge. The Employee Assistance Program also offers referrals and discounts for services such as financial planning.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Allen & Allen sponsors a flexible-benefits spending plan for all employees. This means you can set aside funds on a pre-tax basis to cover qualified medical expenses and/or child care expenses.

Retirement and Savings

We offer our employees a wealth of investment options through our 401(k) Plan. Employees may make contributions to the plan, up to the IRS designated maximum. Allen & Allen also offers a match program in order to help you secure your future.

Leave Time

Allen & Allen offers a very generous Paid Time Off benefit. Paid Time Off is accrued on a monthly basis based on years of service. Employees are encouraged to use their Paid Time Off to enjoy family, friends and personal passions. In addition, Paid Time Off can be used for appointments, doctor’s visits and other necessary time away from work.

Allen & Allen offers up to two weeks of Paid Family Leave for employees who qualify for Family Medical Leave. Employees can use the time to care for their spouse, child, or parent without using his/her own PTO.

The Allen Law Firm will close in recognition of the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, ½ day before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, ½ Day Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Depending on the day of the week on which a recognized holiday falls, Allen & Allen may close for additional days and time.

Other Benefits

The Allen Law Firm also supports our employees by covering expenses associated with professional memberships, job-related certifications, and fees to maintain Notary Public commissions.

Our Tuition Assistance Program provides reimbursement for tuition, books, and fees for employees who are pursuing a degree program or simply taking a few classes to improve their skills.

Several optional benefit programs are available to our employees, including the following: Critical Illness Insurance and Accident Insurance. We continually review our benefit program offerings to make sure that we are providing our employees with opportunities to take care of themselves and their families.

We encourage our employees to give back to their community. In addition to Firm-sponsored volunteer activities, employees can also take 7.5 hours paid time off each year to participate in volunteer service of their own choosing.
