Many are sheltering in place, working or attending school from home, and generally avoiding large groups of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing is not only healthy, but the best way to slow the spread of the virus. However, certain necessities still require us to leave our homes. We all need groceries, gas, and access to medical care among other essential services. Some may require legal services, but are law firms allowed to remain open? And, is leaving your home to travel to and from your lawyer’s office permitted? The answer to both questions is yes.
Governor Northam’s Executive Orders (EO-53 and EO-55) regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) provide that businesses offering professional services (including law firms) may remain open, but should utilize teleworking as much as possible. Where telework is not feasible, such businesses must adhere to social distancing recommendations, enhanced sanitizing practices on common surfaces, and apply the relevant workplace guidance from state and federal authorities. Further, clients may leave their residences for the purpose of obtaining legal services. The governor’s orders remain in effect until June 10, 2020.
