As a parent of three young drivers with another not far behind I was thrilled to hear about the recent amendment to Virginia’s anti-texting and driving laws. Proposed by the governor and passed with strong Democratic support, this new law upgrades texting while driving to a primary offense and increases the fines for violators. This allows police to effect a stop on any driver they observe texting, whereas previously a texting ticket required the officer to observe another offense in order to pull the driver over. New Virginia Law Sets Tougher Penalties for Teens Who Drink and Drive

A new Virginia law increasing the consequences for underage drinking and driving went into effect July 1, 2011.

The 2011 Virginia General Assembly unanimously passed a bill establishing a "zero tolerance" (0.02% BAC) for underage drinking and driving by making it punishable as a class 1 misdemeanor. The punishment for teens that drink and drive - teens convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) - now includes two additional severe penalties:

1.    loss of their driver's license for one year from the date of conviction, AND

2.    either a mandatory minimum fine of $500.00 or 50 hours…

Stop Texting and Keep Your Eyes On the Road - It's Soon To Be the Law

Distracted drivers. We've all seen them, doing things like talking on a cell phone, adjusting the radio, or reading the newspaper. Maybe we've even been one of them. In its most recent session, the Virginia General Assembly decided to take action against one form of distracted driving: drivers who are texting while driving.

Effective July 1, 2009, texting while driving will be a traffic infraction.
