Roundup is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. Farmers, landscapers, nursery workers, and even home gardeners, have used this weed killer for years with no knowledge or warning of any potential cancer risks. In 2019, Monsanto’s parent company, Bayer, began talks of billion-dollar settlements to resolve more than 42,000 lawsuits alleging that its weed killer, Roundup, causes cancer. Evidence obtained through trial discovery revealed internal emails in which Monsanto personnel expressed concern over the building evidence of toxicity of its herbicides and the voluntary failure to conduct carcinogenicity testing of the formulations. The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate, which has been classified as cancer-causing by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a division of the World Health Organization. Trial evidence showed that Monsanto had known Roundup weed killer was carcinogenic for several decades, but chose to bury the risks as product sales continued to skyrocket in the United States and abroad. Furthermore, evidence uncovered during litigation showed that Monsanto cultivated friendly officials within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for support and made secret payments to groups like the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) to promote the safety of Monsanto’s herbicides.
