All of the members of the Allen Law Firm family are extremely saddened at the passing of our partner and friend, Douglas A. Barry. Doug joined the firm sixteen years ago, and has played a vital role in the growth and development of the firm throughout his tenure. He made important contributions as Managing Partner for Marketing for many years, and was then elected in 2007 as the firm’s first President not an Allen by birth, serving in that role until 2012. His personal warmth, his genuine caring for others and his unwavering commitment to his clients represent a remarkable legacy, and will serve as an inspiration to others for many years to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Doug Barry during this difficult time.
Doug Barry is survived by his wife, Mary Dale; and two sons, Davis A. and Logan M. Barry; his mother, Margaret Barry; brother, Learned (Serena) Barry; mother-in-law, Mary Opal Dyke; brother and sister-in-law, two nephews and two nieces. He was a loving husband and father.
Doug graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Psychology in1979, and received his law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1982.
Doug served as the Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Richmond from 1982 to 1984. He worked as a Special Agent for the FBI from 1984-1986. Doug then returned to the practice of law in 1986 as the Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney for Hanover County, serving in that position until 1993. From 1993 to 1996, Doug was a lead trial attorney with the law firm of Hutchens and Hutchens.
Doug joined the Allen Law Firm in 1996, and played a significant role in the growth and development of the firm throughout his tenure. He made important contributions as Managing Partner of Marketing for many years, and served as President of the firm from 2007 to 2012. Doug was recognized in both Best Lawyers in America and Virginia Super Lawyers, and was also selected as a Top Lawyer by Richmond Magazine. He served on the National Advisory Board for the Association of Plaintiff Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America, and was named as one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers in Virginia by the National Trial Lawyers Association.
Doug believed passionately in the Allen Law Firm’s commitment to giving back to the community, and enjoyed sharing his expertise with others by giving more than fifty presentations during the past ten years to fire, rescue, police and EMT organizations across the Commonwealth. Doug’s selfless contributions to the community included also service on the governing Boards of the Greater Richmond Big Brother Big Sisters, the Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Patrick Henry YMCA, in addition to serving on the faculty of the Virginia EMS Symposium.
