{"id":1469,"date":"2015-08-05T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-05T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allenandallen.com\/the-dangers-of-red-light-running\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T17:23:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T22:23:25","slug":"los-peligros-de-pasarse-la-luz-roja","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allenandallen.com\/es\/blog\/the-dangers-of-red-light-running\/","title":{"rendered":"Los peligros de pasarse el sem\u00e1foro en rojo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Running red lights happens frequently at intersections.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0Whether accidental or intentional, running a red light running can cause collisions, injuries, and deaths.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn2\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0To keep yourself and other drivers safe, it is important to understand what it means to run a red light, and why it is so dangerous.<\/p>\n<h2>What Does It Mean to Run a Red Light?<\/h2>\n<p>Many people understand that running a red light means driving through an intersection when the traffic signal is red.\u00a0However, drivers who are <em>unintentionally<\/em> in an intersection when the signal turns red are not \u201crunning a red light\u201d provided they entered the intersection under a green light.\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn3\">[3]<\/a>\u00a0This means that drivers in the intersection waiting to turn left are not running a red light if the traffic signal turns red.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0Running a red light occurs only when a driver enters an intersection <em>after<\/em> the traffic signal has turned red.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn5\">[5]<\/a>\u00a0This includes drivers who turn right on red without first coming to a complete stop, or when a right on red is prohibited.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn6\">[6]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Red Light Running and Vehicle Crashes<\/h2>\n<p>Running red lights is a common cause of vehicle crashes nationwide.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn7\">[7]<\/a>\u00a0 Last year, more than 3.7 million drivers ran a red light.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn8\">[8]<\/a>\u00a0Sadly, drivers who run red lights cost innocent lives \u2013 in 2013, nearly 700 people who were killed in such cases.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn9\">[9]<\/a> Whether drivers run red lights because they are driving recklessly or are just in a hurry, it is dangerous behavior.\u00a0To help raise awareness about the dangers of running red lights, the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR) is conducting National Stop on Red Week this August.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn10\">[10]<\/a>\u00a0Stop on Red Week will work towards raising awareness of the problem and the many collisions that are caused by it.<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn11\">[11]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Ten Reasons to Stop on Red:<a title=\"\" href=\"#ftn12\">[12]<\/a><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Running a red light is against the law.<\/li>\n<li>Running a red light is dangerous.\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">An estimated 7,799 people were killed as a result of drivers who ran a red light between 2004 and 2013.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The cost to society of all crashes exceeds $230 billion annually.<\/li>\n<li>One in three Americans know someone who has been injured or killed in a\u00a0 crash caused by a driver who ran a red light.<\/li>\n<li>Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children age 4 and the second leading cause of death for children age 3 and 5-14.<\/li>\n<li>About half of the deaths caused in crashes involving a red light are innocent pedestrians, bicyclists and occupants of other vehicles .<\/li>\n<li>In 2013, more than 697 people were killed and an estimated 127,000 were injured in crashes involving a red light.<\/li>\n<li>Motorists in urban areas are more likely to be injured in crashes involving red lights than in any other type of crash.<\/li>\n<li>Drivers who run red lights are more than three times as likely as other drivers to have multiple speeding convictions on their driver records.<\/li>\n<li>More than 36 percent of drivers continue to run red lights and take risks, despite the fact that 55 percent of the participants said it is a very serious threat and 73 percent acknowledged that running red lights is unacceptable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>All drivers have a responsibility to drive safely, and avoid collisions.\u00a0 Stopping at red lights avoids collisions with other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.
