{"id":1416,"date":"2014-11-14T19:32:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T19:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allenandallen.com\/safe-driving-tailgating\/"},"modified":"2025-03-17T08:12:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T13:12:18","slug":"conduccion-segura","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allenandallen.com\/es\/blog\/safe-driving-tailgating\/","title":{"rendered":"Conducci\u00f3n segura - Tailgating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tailgating is when one vehicle follows very closely behind another vehicle.\u00a0 Tailgating is dangerous because if the vehicle in front suddenly stops or slows down, the tailgater might not have enough time or distance to avoid a collision.\u00a0 Tailgating is illegal in Virginia, and can lead to tickets, fines and jail time.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/K:\/FIRM\/ATD\/000000\/MEMO\/01123180.DOCX#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The statistics are staggering.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/K:\/FIRM\/ATD\/000000\/MEMO\/01123180.DOCX#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0 Last year, there were 121,763 reported traffic crashes in Virginia \u2013 1 crash every 4.32 minutes.\u00a0 According to the Virginia Highway Safety Office, 741 people were killed, and 65,114 people were injured.\u00a0 <strong>In 2013, following too closely was identified in 28,345 (12.72%) of all motor vehicle crashes in Virginia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tailgating can be accidental, such as when a driver does not realize that he or she is following the other vehicle too closely.\u00a0 It can also be intentional, and can be triggered by aggressive driving or road rage.<\/p>\n<p>One of the best ways to avoid causing a rear-end collision is to make sure that you have enough room in front of your vehicle, so that you can react to changing traffic conditions.\u00a0 If possible, you should leave enough space in front of your vehicle to allow other vehicles to pass and stop safely.\u00a0 It might be necessary to increase your following distance when driving:<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/K:\/FIRM\/ATD\/000000\/MEMO\/01123180.DOCX#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>behind a large vehicle that blocks your vision<\/li>\n<li>in bad weather or heavy traffic<\/li>\n<li>when exiting an expressway<\/li>\n<li>behind a motorcycle<\/li>\n<li>when being tailgated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recommends using the two-, three- and four-second rule to determine if you are following far enough behind the vehicle ahead of you.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Following Distance<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>At these posted speeds and on dry surfaces, this distance, in seconds, allows the driver to steer and brake out of a problem area.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"165\">\n<p align=\"center\">2 seconds<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"153\">\n<p align=\"center\">Under 35 mph<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"165\">\n<p align=\"center\">3 seconds<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"153\">\n<p align=\"center\">36-45 mph<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"165\">\n<p align=\"center\">4 seconds<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"153\">\n<p align=\"center\">46-70 mph<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s how the following distance rule works.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Glance at the vehicle ahead as it passes a fixed object, such as an overpass, sign, fence, corner or other fixed mark.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Begin counting the seconds it takes you to reach the same place in the road.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If you reach the mark before you have counted off two, three, or four seconds, depending on speed, you\u2019re following too closely.
