Buying Motor Vehicle Insurance: Who Are the Best Car Insurance Companies?

Autor: David M. Williams, Jr., Stafford Personal Injury Attorney

Como un abogado litigante de lesiones personales, I battle with insurance companies on a daily basis – both inside and outside of the courtroom. In today’s society, many view the insurance industry as employing a strategy to “deny, delay and defend” claims in an effort to put their profits first and policyholders / claimants second. People need to remember that insurance companies are not in business to pay claims… they are in business to collect your premiums every month.

Given the increasing problems my clients encounter with insurance companies, I am frequently asked the simple question: “Who is the best insurance company for my car?” Although I know which insurance companies seem easier or harder to deal with, there are more comprehensive studies done of how customers themselves feel about auto insurance companies. A recent customer satisfaction survey rated the best auto insurance companies of 2013 based on who has the most satisfied customers. The results were as follows[1]:

Company Overall Satisfaction Rating

USAA 96.00

Erie Insurance Group 91.71

Auto Owners Insurance 88.07

MetLife 86.40

Country Insurance 85.87

American Family 85.08

Nationwide 83.81

AAA 82.53

State Farm 82.29

Allstate 81.63

GEICO 81.44

GMAC 81.40

Mercury General 80.33

The Hartford 80.24

Progressive 79.80

Farmers 79.34

Esurance 78.64

Liberty Mutual 77.93

21S t Century 75.74

Travelers 73.58 conducted this particular survey of customers nationwide in the areas of customer service, claims satisfaction, price value and the percentage of customers who plan to renew their coverage. They interviewed more than 4,500 insurance customers nationwide. There are many other companies who rate / review insurance companies including J.D. Power and Associates and Consumer Reports.

Of course, survey results do not guarantee that you will have a positive experience when dealing with a particular insurance company. I encourage my clients to also seek the opinions of family, friends and co-workers before making a final decision on purchasing insurance. In Virginia, the Bureau of the Insurance, a division of the Virginia State Corporation Commission, is also a good resource.[2] The Bureau licenses, regulates, investigates and examines insurance companies and their agents on behalf of Virginia citizens. They also assist thousands of Virginia consumers each year by responding to inquires and complaints.
