Caden is a graduating senior from Turner Ashby High School
Q: What does receiving this scholarship mean to you?
A: It means that I can go to college, I was always scared of tuition, so receiving this helps financially, but it also makes me realize what I’ve gone through and what I’ve done has helped me receive this scholarship which helps me with the opportunity to go to college.
Q: Is there someone in your life that has inspired you to achieve your goals?
A: Mr. Dunlap. I’ve always overthought everything I do. He has always been able to level my head and guide me into the right direction. He also has always been willing to listen and talk about anything I’m worried about. This has helped me with overcoming many adversities. I see him more of a friend than a teacher with how much he has impacted my life. He has gone to all of my performances that he has been able to and is always there for my auditions. He is always there when he can help out
Q: What are your hobbies? What do you do for fun?
A: One of the things I enjoy most is hanging out with friends. I love being around people, talking with people. I enjoy drawing and photography, but music takes up everything. Even now I play the piano for fun. I also love space and learning new things with biology and genetics.
Q: Where will you be attending college next year?
A: Christopher Newport University.
Q: Have you decided on a major? If so, do you have any specific career plans?
A: Currently, I’m planning on majoring in Music Education and Voice. I want to double major and, in the future, I know I want to teach, but I also want to keep performing as much as possible in musicals, plays, and more. I just love performing!
Q: What advice would you give younger students facing similar challenges as you?
A: It’s drive, for me. I would say set a goal. For me, that was college, because I personally felt behind with my education because of what I’ve been through. I’ve strived to reach my goal of going to college and get a degree, have a career and a life instead of being stuck where I am. The fact I can make a change has been my inspiration.
Q: What do you consider your strongest character trait?
A: My open-mindedness to others and empathy towards others. Mainly because of what I’ve been though, I’ve always been understanding and humble to what I have now. I have always have been kind to others when things are happening to them because I know it’s hard and I can show that I care.
Q: Do you feel that overcoming an obstacle, like you have, has changed you? What lessons have you learned along the way?
Yes. They, for one, have completely changed my perspective on life. On everything. I’m humbled; I know that someone has it worse than me, or that someone has it worse than I have had before. I’ve learned to have great dedication to what I do due to my adversities. I know how valuable it is to have a roof over your head. My medical history has brought me down. And I’ve been able to sit down to push myself to do the best that I could have done and that made me successful.
