6 Ways to Enjoy Holiday Parties Safely

It’s the time of year again where it seems like every weekend is filled with Christmas shopping, holiday parties, and plenty of champagne. Despite all of the excitement and good cheer, this is a potentially dangerous season for all kinds of merry-making mishaps.

Whether you plan to attend your annual office blowout or host your own party for your family and friends, there are several safety tips you should keep in mind so that your fiesta won’t turn into a fiasco.

If you are hosting a party:

  • Clear your driveway, steps, and porch of ice and snow. The last thing you want is for one of your guests to slip and injure themselves before the party has even begun!
  • Reduce the number of candles and other flammables in the house. This includes kitchen gadgets and overused electrical sockets that could cause fires in your home. Also be careful of plugging too many things into the same surge protector as your Christmas tree, as the amount of electricity could melt your devices or start a fire.
  • Make sure you stop serving alcohol an hour before the party ends and instead serve coffee or tea along with a few more appetizers like crackers or a veggie tray. As the host/hostess, it is your responsibility to make sure no one drives away from your party intoxicated.

If you are attending someone else’s party:

  • Make sure your transportation is secured in advance. Watch the weather carefully for snow or freezing rain and ice on the roads. Make sure that the designated driver is comfortable with the road conditions and with driving in the dark.
  • If you are bringing treats to the party, avoid potential allergens in the food. If you do choose a recipe with common allergens like nuts or dairy products, label your dish with a warning for other guests.
  • Bring safe options to the table or the bar. If you have been asked to supply a few beverages, bring along a couple of non-alcoholic options as well. Not everyone drinks, but everyone will still want to clink their glasses and say cheers!

We wish you a safe and joyous holiday season!
