Charlottesville Recognizes a Few Local Heroes
Please view the video news clip from NBC 29 for the full story:
When Allen and Allen law firm hit their centennial, they decided to honor 100 heroes across Virginia. The Charlottesville community recognized 33 of those heroes on Friday.
Matt Murray of Allen and Allen said, "Everybody should, and most people do, give back to their communities. Some people do it in a greater way to people who are perhaps in more need."
Mildred Spicer started the Therapeutic Recreation Program for Charlottesville Parks and Recreation in 1979. After 30-years, she's still there bringing fun and games to more than 3,000 people with disabilities each year.
Spicer said, "It's hard for you and me to even imagine what they go through and yet they meet those challenges and are very productive individuals."
Spicer has helped athletes, musicians, artists and beauty queens, but she doesn't like taking any credit for their successes. Spicer said, "They're the heroes, not me."
The goal of Spicer's programs is building confidence. She wants mentally and physically disabled individuals in Charlottesville to be embraced by the community as they make the very best of their day-to-day struggles. Spicer said, "They accept life like it is each day and make it worth while."
All 100 heroes will be honored together in Richmond at a Flying Squirrels game in August, and one of Charlottesville's heroes has been chosen to throw the first pitch.
