Texting while driving is illegal in Virginia for all drivers.  But did you know that using a cellular phone, whether hands free or not, is not allowed for any drivers under the age of 18?  Virginia prohibits the use of all cellular telephone and any other telecommunications device for drivers under 18 years of age, unless 1)  the vehicle is lawfully parked or stopped, or 2) for driver emergency.

With summer in full swing there are plenty of young drivers on the road enjoying their new found freedom.  As the number of young drivers increases, unfortunately so does the risk of automobile accidents.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the leading causes of teen car crashes are driver inexperience, alcohol and drug use, driving in inclement weather, risky behavior such as speeding, and driver distractions in the car.

Safety Myth or Reality --Are Teenage Drivers at a Higher Risk for Crashes and Fatalities?

 

We frequently hear in the local news about automobile crashes and fatalities involving teenage drivers. Are teenage drivers involved in accidents more than other age groups ? Recently I had the opportunity to study reports from Virginia Commonwealth University Transportation Safety Training Center-Crash Investigative Team. The reports provide a comparison of crash frequencies and causes are examined to explore reasons why and what possible remedial actions can be taken to reduce these problems.
