New Auto Recall by Honda, Mazda, and Nissan Affecting Millions of Vehicles

Author: Trent S. Kerns, Personal Injury Attorney, Chesterfield VA

Amid the fallout from GM’s recent massive recall, some of the world’s largest automakers have recently issued recalls of their own. BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota have announced plans to recall millions of cars sold in the US. Whereas GM’s recall involved a faulty ignition switch, this new round of recalls involves air bag systems installed in older-model cars and affects areas with hot and humid weather.

The reason this recall affects more than one automaker is that the automakers have a common supplier for the air bags. Some of the air bag systems have air bag inflators that can rupture. If an accident occurs and the air bag inflators have ruptured, the air bags might not deploy properly and shards from the broken system could fly out, injuring the vehicle’s occupants. Additionally, in consistently hot and humid weather, there is a potential for pressure to build up in the air bag system, causing the air bags to deploy with too much force.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation after receiving reports of air bags rupturing in places like Florida and Puerto Rico. Though the recall has been initially aimed at warmer states like Texas, Georgia, and Florida, the government is continuing to investigate the issue.
