The GM recall continues to grow, with the company announcing six new recalls involving 8.4 million more vehicles worldwide. These vehicles were found to have had the same problems as the earlier recalled vehicles, namely faulty ignition switches. Additionally, GM discovered that some cars had faulty wiring and fasteners and it has included these vehicles in the recall as well. With this latest announcement, GM brings the total number of vehicles recalled in 2014 to 27 million.
When the recalls were first announced, it came to light that GM had been aware of some of the problems plaguing their vehicles and failed to take corrective measures. The news of GM’s delay in reporting that the faulty ignition switches were responsible for 13 deaths prompted a public outcry and a government investigation into GM’s actions. GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, has apologized for the delay and the company recently outlined a compensation plan for the victims affected by the recalls.
