Blood Thinner Xarelto Linked to Severe Internal Bleeding and Infections

Author: Jason W. Konvicka, Richmond, VA Drug Injury Attorney

Xarelto is a new generation anti-coagulant (blood thinner) that is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceutical and marketed by Bayer Healthcare. It is widely prescribed to prevent blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation. The drug is also used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the deep veins, typically in the legs) and pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs). Xarelto and other similar anti-coagulant drugs including Pradaxa, Eliquis, Zontivity and Savaysa are typically prescribed as an alternative to Coumadin (also known as Warfarin), which has been widely used since the mid-1950’s.

Coumadin is an effective blood thinner. In addition, the blood thinning effects of Coumadin can be reversed for patients with an emergent need such as emergency surgery. On the other hand, Xarelto can cause internal bleeding which cannot be reversed. It has been linked to severe and even fatal injuries caused by uncontrolled bleeding.

Xarelto has also been linked to infections associated with hip or knee replacement surgery, decreased hemoglobin, brain hemorrhaging, hematoma, peripheral edema, and difficulty breathing.
