Author: Attorney Melinda H. South

Governor McDonnell officially recognized May as Military Appreciation Month.  In the Certificate of Recognition, Governor McDonnell stated there are nearly 200,000 Virginians serving on active duty in the National Guard or other reserve components, or as civilian federal defense contractors employed at installations throughout the Commonwealth.  He recognized the sacrifices made by the members of the United States Armed Forces and their family members.  Almost everyone has been touched in some way by the current conflicts.  Some of us - for the first time in our lives - are going through  the pain and anguish of watching a person we know go off to war.  Many of us have…

Tenants Need Renters Insurance - Protect Yourself and Your Belongings

Author: Attorney Melinda South

When renting their first apartment or house, tenants often don't  think of renters insurance unless their landlord requires it.  Although the landlord may have insurance, this usually only protects the property owned by the landlord - and not the tenant's property.

Renters insurance will provide coverage for your personal property as well as liability coverage.[1] You may assume that you don't own that much, so why bother?  If you take an inventory of what it would cost to replace your personal property, you may be surprised by the total value of what you own.  Television, laptop, and mobile phone replacement escalates the value of your property very quickly, even…

Women in Law

Author: Attorney Tammy Ruble, Esquire

When I graduated from high school in 1977, I was honored to win a scholarship for a "Woman Going Into a Non-Traditional Field" from a local women's group.  I was a bit surprised by the name of the award, as it had never occurred to me that a woman in law was considered unusual.

The year I started college, only 30.1% of the persons entering law school were women. When I started law school in 1981, the number had risen to 37.2%.  The percentage continued to edge up and was 47.1% for the entering class in 2009.[1] Despite this increase, in 2009 the U. S Bureau of Labor statistics reported that only 32.4% of all lawyers were women, although it is encouraging to…
