Ted is a formidable adversary, whose wealth of experience and talent has enabled him to score many victories for his clients both through settlement and at trial. He has litigated a broad range of matters in the area of personal injury law, in both state and federal court and is known for his practicality and ability to find creative solutions to his clients’ legal problems.
Ted is among the outstanding trial lawyers in the state of Virginia. He has been recognized in the reference book Best Lawyers In America since 1987 and has been elected to membership in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, a highly selective honorary legal organization.
A leader of the organized bar, Ted is a former chair of the Tort Law Section of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and served as President of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association in 1993-94. Within the Allen law firm, he is known for his tremendous appetite for work. Ted's responsibilities as attorney and partner at Allen & Allen have included personal injury litigation, products liability litigation, medical malpractice litigation, and law firm management.
In 1980, Ted became the first member of the Virginia State Bar to be board certified as a Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He has also served as a faculty member for the course on Professionalism given to new Bar members.
Ted has won major cases, some of which have involved litigation of novel issues on the cutting edge of tort law. Among them are a medical malpractice case against a psychiatrist who had sexual relations with an adolescent patient and a products liability case against the manufacturer of a washing machine for a young woman who lost her hand when the washing machine malfunctioned. Ted also won a groundbreaking products liability case that extended the time limitation in Virginia within which a plaintiff can sue the manufacturer of asbestos-containing insulation products because the ill effects of exposure to asbestos may not become manifest for many years.
Ted enjoys working with the talented and professional team at Allen & Allen. His particular passions are ensuring victims' rights and safety, and improving accident prevention. Ted joined the firm in 1973 after his law school graduation. He served as President of the Allen law firm from 1990 to 1999.
