(Allen & Allen represented the injured party) – Richmond Times Dispatch Oct. 24, 2004

Our History
The First Generation

We've been in business more than 95 years – through three generations of lawyers.

In 1910, George E. Allen opened his first law office in Lunenburg County, Virginia. He later moved his office to Victoria, Virginia, where he also served as the youngest mayor in the town's history.

In 1931, during the Depression, George Allen moved his firm and his family to Richmond. Over the ensuing years, his three sons – George E. Allen, Jr., Ashby B. Allen, and Wilbur C. Allen – joined their father in the practice of law.

George Allen developed a national reputation as an outstanding trial attorney. The firm's founder, who also served a term as a Virginia state senator, was instrumental in expanding the legal rights of persons injured through no fault of their own. He was a highly respected appellate lawyer who frequently argued cases before the Virginia Supreme Court and established new legal principles benefiting injured persons. George Allen served as president of the Richmond Bar Association in 1959 and was the first president of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.

In 1965, the American College of Trial Lawyers presented him with its first Award for Courageous Advocacy as a result of his work defending a member of a minority group against unjust charges. Mr. Allen also was a founder of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.

During the early 1950s, Allen & Allen successfully represented injured plaintiffs in a landmark product liability case, Mahone v. Ford Motor Company, one of the earliest successful products liability cases against a U.S. automobile manufacturer. It was during this period that Allen & Allen decided to limit its practice to personal injury law.

The Second Generation

The second generation of Allen attorneys – George E. Allen, Jr., Ashby B. Allen, and Wilbur C. Allen – built on their father's success.

George E. Allen, Jr., who died in 1990, served for 28 years in the Virginia House of Delegates where he helped enact laws that continue to safeguard the rights of injured victims today. He practiced law with Allen & Allen for more than 55 years representing personal injury plaintiffs exclusively for more than 35 of those years.

In 1990, George Allen, Jr. became the first recipient of the "War Horse" award given by the Southern Trial Lawyers Association in recognition of Mr. Allen's extraordinary contributions to the trial bar.

Before joining the Allen law firm, Ashby B. Allen, now retired, served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He is a past president of the Richmond Trial Lawyers Association, and a former board member of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.

Wilbur C. Allen, now retired, is a past president of the Allen firm. He was invited to be a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an honor awarded to experienced trial lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional skill as advocates. Wilbur has served as president of the Richmond Bar Association and has served on the Virginia State Bar Council.

The Allen & Allen Personal Injury Law Firm Today

One key to the Allen firm's identity over the past nine decades has been our focus on family. Today, 10 Allen family members remain involved with the firm, including the founder's sons, Ashby and Wilbur. However, other lawyers and legal professionals have joined the Allen & Allen personal injury law firm and also make a positive difference in our clients' lives.

Our Focus
Personal Injury Law

During the 1950s, Allen & Allen limited its practice to personal injury claims. More than 50 years later, this sole focus on personal injury law has given the firm the knowledge and expertise necessary to successfully represent our clients' best interests at every stage of the legal process.

Representing plaintiffs in personal injury cases is our business – our only business. We have no divided loyalties because we never represent insurance companies, corporations, or wrongdoers who cause personal injuries to others.

Medical Malpractice Law

In 2001, Allen & Allen established a medical malpractice section devoted to representing persons injured through the negligence of doctors, hospitals, and other health care institutions/providers.

Our medical malpractice team has proven its credentials by winning many favorable jury verdicts and settlements, including a record-breaking $6.5 million medical malpractice verdict in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 2003.

Our Reputation in the Legal Community

Our legal experience both in and out of the courtroom has earned us the respect of our peers throughout Central Virginia and around the country. In fact, other Virginia lawyers have recognized our firm by voting to include five of our lawyers in the book Best Lawyers in America. Allen & Allen personal injury lawyers have been listed in this prestigious publication for more than 20 years. In addition, three of our lawyers are Board Certified as civil trial advocates by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.  They are the only Richmond, Virginia attorneys to hold such a distinction.  Our firm's longstanding legal reputation rests on high ethical standards and professionalism. We give our clients honest and forthright legal advice. We're aggressive when necessary but compassionate when needed.

The Allen & Allen personal injury law firm has always been active in professional associations and our lawyers have served as founding members and officers in many of them:

  • Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (VTLA)
  • Southern Trial Lawyers Association (STLA)
  • American Association for Justice (AAJ)
